Asma,

Maybe your family visa's will not take too long to process. I know when my husband was in AP I just told myself that I could not get excited or even tell anyone that he was cleared until his visa was in hand.

In our interview CO offer my wife if she want, she issuing visa to her and children or with your husband (me) but my wife replied that she want to travel to USA with her husband. She issued tokens to my wife and children and returns my passport with “Blue Sheet” and gives us about 2 months for my clearance. On our email (last week) they still replied that if my wife and children want visas will be issued to them immediately or with me as my clearance received.

My first name is not common. Khan is not part of my name and I traveled central Asia 10 years ago for 15 days? So what is your opinion?

Ali,

Honestly, I just think your name is in the processing somewhere and may of had a hit. Also, being that your case is an I-130 your security checks are more thorough than with the K's since your AOS is done before you come stateside. You will be work and travel authorized and that is one of the reasons CR/IR cases take more time to process.

I do not think the travel is is that big of an issue since it was so far back. Your name and the tons of data bases it has to go through is causing the delays.

In the past 5-6 months was the average time for AP so it looks like if they are keeping this time frame you will be cleared in the next few months. Hard to wait but and be in the dark but not much you can do but hope and pray that the AP finishes soon.

FYI one of the name checks is done like this example. They take the name and run its letters forward, backward and everyone way it could be spelled.

Mary, Mari, Merry, Merri, Yarm, etc. so this is one of the reasons for name check delays.

Update on my sister's case

Mary,

My sister today received call from Islamabad Embassy that her and her daughter's case is completed and Islamabad Embassy is ready to issue them visas. Her husband and son cases are still Pending. My sister told them to hold on to issuance of the visas for them till her husband and son's cases are cleared. It was strange to know that it took only two weeks after their interview to get administrative Processing completed in Washington D.C.(for two of them out of 4).

As far as my husband is concerned I was not able to contact Congressman last week but called Washington D.C. and was told that his case is still going through security clearance. It is almost 18 months since the interview.

Update on my sister's case

Asma, security clearances can take as little time as a few days to a few weeks. Ladies up until last year were not in AP unless they traveled or job/education fields. So I am not surprised that they are cleared.

The men are the one's that have any lengthy processing and here is to hoping that they are finalized soon.

I was not able to contact Congressman

Try and do this if you can this week so they can at least get you the release forms and they can inquire on your behalf.

Mary, My nephew case also go cleared today. Only my brother in law is now pending.

Should my sister go ahead and send their passport as requested by Islamabad Embassy for issuance of visas for them(excluding husband) or wait for husband processing.

I will take to congressman tomorrow for my husband. Just pray for me as now it is 18 months since the interview. DOS is saying that they received the case in May 2007 for security check. Any idea why they received the case 6 months after interview i.e. December 21, 2006.

Asma, Your sister can get the cleared visas if they are going to travel on them before the expiration dates (once a stamp is put in the passport it has a expiration date). Make sure that they know once they pick them up they will have to leave before the expiration date. Usually the date is 6 months from the issuance date but it can be sooner. Mian's visa was only valid for 3 months or he would of had to have new medical and new police certificates since the originals one would of been expired after the 3 months. And then his name would have to have been run back through the proper agencies for clearances once again. Just make your sister aware they have a time frame for them to leave if they pick up the visa or keep them on hold too long. If she wants to she could come with the rest of the family and set up their home in the USA and have it ready for her husband to follow hopefully soon.

I make prayers/Dua's daily for anyone that is going through this process and ask for them to have their separation ended or for God/Allah to grant them patience and understanding during this difficult time.

I do not know why they held your husband's case up for so long before they sent it to DOS. I know our case was not sent to DOS until after we had a home field investigation and then it was months later before they sent it for clearances. Maybe they did this type of investigation before it was forwarded?

Good luck with the congressional aide tomorrow.

Icon13 AP

HI,
First of all I'd like to say Thanks to whose resolvings burning queries.
Me and my wife were interviwd in ISL on 14th of May 2008. We'd been thru tricky questions at last they gave us white paper (containing info about couriers) and a Blue Paper along with a Purple token. Officer had indicated us that your visa is granted but gota go thru AP since you were in PK for last 15 months??? It shouldn't take more than 6 weeks it's kinda formality and part of the process!!!

Any idea how long does it take or what precautions should be taken? For more info regarding my case please feel free to write.

Best Regards

Fomee

Again he shouldn't have told you a time frame. It'd be nice if it only took 6 weeks but prepare yourselves for a year of waiting or more (always best to prepare yourselves emotionally for the worst). But is it your wife or you who is applying for the IV? Women do go through quicker than men.

Fomee congratulations no a successful interview and good luck on a quick AR/AP. Anyone that applies to come to the USA has to have security checks run on their fingerprints and names and there is no way to determine how long this will take. Try not to make a time estimate or you will wonder what happened, is there a problem, or other unnecessary thoughts will come to mind.

If you both are Pakistani in origin the AR/AP is always less time than if you marry someone else. Males from Pakistan and other countries considered T-countries have a more thorough background check since 9/11 and since 2007 ladies have had new check added called Material Support. Hang in there and hopefully you clearances will not take too long.

AP ISL ...

Hi there,
I've also got AP from ISL on 14th of May 2008. We were given a white paper (containing courier info) purple token attached with that and returned passport with same purple color sticker on it we also gota a BLUE PAPER saying "Your case has been tem refused for further Administrative Processing" ???

Officer verbally said your visa is granted but you gota go thru AP which will take 6 weeks (i hope so) and on our request send us your passport we will put the visa on in 10 working days.

My wife had asked, why he's being given AP? that officer mentioned that (your hubby) has been in PK for more than 16 months we need to do some sort of security check it's kinds a formality though...

As I've read everyone's exprience regarding AP it takes for ever ... do you see any positive things to get it done earlier according to their given time fashion?

What precautions ought to be taken meanwhile? Will they visit me @ my home ??? How to check the status of the AP case of ISL US Embassy any phone num with direct ex or email please?

Please guide us ...

With Best Regards

Fomee

Fomee there is nothing much you can do but wait out the AR/AP. My suggestion is not to travel out of Pakistan during this time. If or when they do home visits, neighborhood, school/job visits most times you are unaware of the fact that someone has been inquiring about your case. In some cases they do the interviews at the house or other place they visit and it is done unannounced.

You can contact the embassy IV unit but it is very hard to contact a live person and you can be disconnected or have long waits on hold. That number should be on the paperwork for the AR/AP. Calling them too much will only hinder the case and it says not to contact them before 45 days. This means no holidays or days that the embassy closes for the weekend.

DOS is your best bet and you can call them on Wednesday afternoons or Thursday's and they have any updated notes on your case by that time. Weeks can go by and they may not have any news so try not to judge too much into your processing time.

Mary, I went to the website on Friday to send email to Congressman but have not received any response. Is there any phone number I need to call. I did not find any phone number. How do I find the number for my zip code 75063.

I know it will sound too stupid to ask such a question but based on your indepth knowledge it will be good to make sure I know what I am doing.

I called Department of State Visa office today also andd was told that case is still Pending (Security Check) and last follow up which was sent was on May 09, 2008 after one Follow up which was send on February 19, 2008.

No response to the email sent to Embassy in Islamabad.

My husband is really getting very frustrated and asking us to come back to Pakistan and wait with him there.

I have very ordinary job and I can quite but my Son has good job with the Bank (full time) and it will be difficult for him to find something again if he resigns. Also my daughter's classes at community college will be starting next month.

What should we do just need some good advice.

Fomee,

DOS phone number 202 663 1225 then press 1 and then 0 to talk to a live operator. Islamabad updated DOS on Wednesday afternoons or Thursday mornings. DOS is Department of State and is located in Washington, DC.

I suggest you call them after one month if you have not heard back from Islamabad but not before.

Asma, see the informational post for your district above this reply. I would call the person you need to talk to if at all possible. Most times when you write or email them it may take some time for someone to respond to you.

This is just a case of security checks possibly some expiring before all complete at the same time and I see it like a dog chasing its tail going in circles. You need to try and get the congressional aide to inquire and see if they cannot help at this point. They cannot stop the checks but see if all are clearing and they cannot see which one could be the slowest causing the others to expire and have an SAO meeting. SAO stands for Security Advisory Opinion meeting where the CO and others will have a actual meeting and determine why the case is stuck.

No response to the email sent to Embassy in Islamabad.I am not too surprised. When you wrote to them did you put in the case number, the full name, DOB and all pertinent information? I know if you omit this they cannot fully check the status of your case. But when I emailed them I only heard back from them twice and it was a canned response of the case is still in AP.

My husband is really getting very frustrated and asking us to come back to Pakistan and wait with him there.I can understand his frustrations any maybe a visit home would help if you could financially afford the time off and travel; if not then try and assure him you are doing all you can at this time.

I have very ordinary job and I can quite but my Son has good job with the Bank (full time) and it will be difficult for him to find something again if he resigns. Also my daughter's classes at community college will be starting next month.Asma, only you can make this type of decision for you and your family. Like I said above maybe you could go and visit him? You have to ask yourself will it benefit your family to go back at this time or will it hurt the kids with their schooling and job? Only you can weigh out the benefits vs the burden. Good luck dear, and still remembering you in my prayers.

What should we do just need some good advice.

Icon2 With More Detials ...

Hey there,
Sorry for little delay to reply, factually my wife had a flight yesterday for US from PK @ the 11th hr she had cancelled it bcz she doesn't wana leave me here since I got "AP" and we certainly don't know how long it's gona take us 2 see each other again our luvly kids are awaiting over there impatiently 2 c us together it's jeopardy...! My wife will leave sonly for kids.

I'm juz little confused are you some kind of official guide of IV or you just share your great experience with us on this helpful firm?

We were making plans to visit Europe to kill AP time period but as you have suggested not flying till AP is done! We changed our plans...thanks for the kind advice.

I'd like go in little deep in my case.

My wife's publication divorce was declared on 6th of Dec 2006, we had got married on 7th of Dec 2006, we had field it thru our Hi Fi Lawyer from Chicago on 18th of Dec 2006, then on 20th of Jan 2007 I had taken V-D, I-130 was approved on 3rd of May 2007, on Valentine 14th of Feb 2008 finally Case was Completed, NVC forwarded it to ISL on 2nd of April, an interview was scheduled on 14th of May 2008... over all got an AP!!!

My simple question goes to you that during that time didn't NVC or any other agency had verified my background done name check before approving I-130 or Completing Case??? If they did then why were we still nominated for an AP " stood to verify my stay in PK what so ever I've done since I came back from US (told by interwieng officer) I'd like to inform you that during last 16 months of stay in PK. I had been to UK to meet my wife last year in April 2006 unfortunately we couldn't met there because I-130 was approved in first week of MAY 2007 we had thought that we shall be calling for the interview no sooner did I get back to Pavilion once again we had underestimated it totally wrong. It had ruined the whole trip it was devastating by the way now another question arise "Why do they require a " CHARACTER/POLICE CERTIFICATE " since an FBI gona double check my background while I'm in PK?

And what purple TOEKN stands for? I got one on the passport another on AP letter?

I anticipate an optimism reply once again you doing a splendid job.

Good luck!

No official guide - we are just SUPER lucky to have Mary's expertise here on this forum.

I am just a regular person than had to learn this process for my husband. At the time no one spoke of AP/AR and it was a dark hole. I brought it all out asking questions and decided to share my experiences to hopefully help others going through this process.

All persons that file any petitons with USCIS have a background check including the US citizen. At each step of the process more checks are done and then once you have your interview the last set of checks are determined from the interview. The CO can ask for certain checks depending on your job, your education, or travels if he wants things verified. The local police character/police checks verify who you are basically and that you do not have a crimminal background.

It would be nice if they could order the checks before the interview but they do not and since 9/11 more checks are run on men especially of certain nationalities.

The purple token(s) look at them and it should have some numbers on it. I am not sure if they are alike but they are only one half's. The other half is with the courier service that will contact you to pick up your visa. They match the tokens and the numbers must be exact for you to get your visa.

Hope my reply answers your questions and look forward to hearing that your AR/AP is completed soon. I am glad you decided not to travel now since it would only delay your security checks. Good luck.

Ali,

Do you have any updates on your case? Were you able to talk to DOS?
