Icon14 SSN - Social Security Card - Enumeration At Entry

My husband entered the US on Jan 26, 2009 on an IR-1 visa.

On his DS-230 form, he answered "Yes" to the question "Do you want the Social Security Administration to assign you an SSN (and issue a card) or issue you a new card (if you have an SSN)?".

It has been 3 weeks since he entered the US. He hasn't received his Social Security card or the Green Card uptil now. He hasn't even received the Welcome Letter yet.

I visited my local SSA office a week back and they told me to come back if we do not receive the card in the mail 3 weeks after the date of entry. Now, after 3 weeks, I called SSA, and the operator told me to wait at least 8 weeks for the SS card.

When I called USCIS, they told me wait 30 days (from date of entry) before calling them again.

I read the SSN Guide and read this information about Enumeration at Entry. They both say the number should be assigned within 3 weeks.

What do you suggest I do? Should we go to the local office again? What about the welcome letter/green card? When should that be expected?

I just talked to SSA again and this time the operator told him to go into the local office with all the paper work and ask if an SSN has been assigned. If it has, then they should be able to give it to him right away and then he can wait for the card in the mail. Otherwise, he will have to submit the SSN application (SS-5).

You can do either of those things. Based on my observations (and for some reason constantly trying to defend EAE) if you have not had a Welcome Letter or a hint from SSA in four weeks from arrival, you need to start making noise.

The SSN is generated from the DS-230, which can only be stimulated to action by (whichever agency) entering the Immigrant packet into the system. This generates the card production order for the Green Card and the SSA transmission that generates that account.

Your top priority should be making sure that immigrant packet got entered into the system and not sent straight to storage.

After 4 weeks, I think it's no harm/no foul to go to SSA and re-apply for the account with form SS-5.

Also, at POE they are supposed to trigger this process, so a call to that area(I know is hard), might help, in any case start making noise is good, just maybe someone was talking on the cell phone while processing (and archiving)your papers.

The CBP officer at the Point of Entry collects the IV envelope (the big brown one) -- the SS application is made by whomever processes that. I don't think they do it at the POE itself.
